Hank’s Happenings: Fun in the Summer Sun
Hello Friends!
It’s me, Hank!
I’ve been spending a lot of time outside lately, and let me tell you, I am one happy dog.
The grass is green. The sun is warm. The birds are singing. There are so many interesting smells everywhere I go. After a long Minnesota winter, it feels good to stretch my legs, wag my tail, and spend time outdoors.
A few weeks ago, I attended the Gilda’s Club Minnesota Gala. There were so many wonderful people in one room! I got to greet guests, make new friends, and collect an impressive number of pets. I saw people laughing together, sharing stories, and supporting one another. From where I was sitting, it looked a lot like what we do every day at Gilda’s Club: creating community.
One thing I love about this time of year is getting outside. Sometimes I go for walks. Sometimes I explore a trail. One of my favorite activities is paddleboarding. I like being out on the water, feeling the breeze through my fur and watching the world drift by.
When I’m outside, I notice lots of other animals, too. Ducks floating on the lake. Rabbits hopping through the grass. Squirrels doing squirrel things. Birds singing from the trees.
I think animals are pretty amazing.
Many of us have animal friends at home who make us smile, help us feel calm, and remind us that we’re loved. Even watching wildlife can bring a little joy to the day. If you’ve ever stopped to watch a bird build a nest or a duck lead its ducklings across a pond, you know what I mean.
Summer in Minnesota can be very exciting. There are lakes to visit, trails to explore, gardens to enjoy, baseball games to attend, and farmers markets filled with wonderful smells. Humans seem especially eager to fit all the fun into these warm months. I understand. I get excited, too.
But I have something important to share.
One of the things dogs do really well is rest.
You might see me happily walking one moment and snoring in a sunbeam the next.
I don’t feel guilty about it.
Rest helps me recharge so I can be ready for my next adventure, whether that’s greeting a new friend, going paddleboarding, or investigating a particularly interesting smell.
Humans need rest, too.
As you enjoy all that summer has to offer, I hope you’ll remember to make time to pause. Sit by a lake. Watch the clouds. Listen to the birds. Feel the sunshine. Take a nap if you can.
The world will still be waiting when you wake up.
This summer, I hope you find time for adventure, connection, fresh air, and rest. I hope you find moments that make your tail wag, whatever that looks like for you.
Until next time, keep your nose to the breeze and your heart open to joy.
With gratitude, tail wags, and golden fur,
