Embracing the Season of Giving and Gratitude
“Those who are the happiest are those who do the most for others.” – Booker T. Washington
Fall is among my favorite seasons, representing a time of transition and reflection. As my kids return to school, we establish a new routine that contrasts with the longer, more leisurely days of summer. The moment I spot the first leaf falling, I am that person who eagerly pulls out all the fall decorations and sets up pumpkins—this year, I’m excited to say that I grew my own! When my children were younger, I would create a tree from construction paper and hang it on our kitchen door. My tree was not Pinterest-worthy by any means, but the kids did not care. I encouraged them to trace their hands in vibrant autumn colors: on one hand, they would write something they were grateful for, and on the other, write a kind deed they had done for someone else. I genuinely believe gratitude and generosity go hand in hand (no pun intended 😊). Each year, I noticed a remarkable shift in our home’s atmosphere when we engaged in this activity. There was less arguing and bickering, and I observed them helping one another—acts of kindness became contagious. This positive response to sharing our time, talents, and resources is not mere coincidence; there’s science behind it. Studies show that a single act of gratitude can lead to a 10% increase in happiness and a 35% decrease in depressive symptoms. It stimulates those “feel-good” chemicals—oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine—that are crucial for mood regulation. Some research even indicates it can lower blood pressure and contribute to a longer life!
In another study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, findings reveal that volunteering and giving can significantly reduce rates of depression and anxiety. It fosters a sense of purpose, teaches valuable skills, promotes social interaction, builds support, and enhances overall life satisfaction and self-esteem. I am lucky to witness this every day at Gilda’s Club. I see members uplifting each other, greeters welcoming everyone with smiles, and individuals contributing what they can to enrich our community.
