A Constellation of Hope

Gilda's Club Minnesota March 16, 2026

Spring in Minnesota always feels hard-won.

We emerge from the cold season slowly. The snow does not melt all at once. The light stretches longer before we fully trust it. And yet – beneath the frozen ground – life has been quietly preparing to rise.

A cancer journey can feel much the same.

When a diagnosis comes, when treatments begin, when uncertainty settles in – it can feel like winter has arrived without warning. The landscape changes. The familiar feels unfamiliar. The path forward is not always visible. And in those moments, no one should have to stand alone in the cold.

At Gilda’s Club Minnesota, we know this deeply.

And right now, beyond the walls of our clubhouse, we also feel the weight of hard things across our Minnesota community. Economic strain. Healthcare complexity. Families stretched thin. Grief that lingers. Food insecurity that quietly compounds the stress of illness. There is a collective fatigue many of us are carrying.

But here is what I see every day:

The best of who we are shines brightest when things are hardest.

Like stars in the winter sky, each of you – members, volunteers, donors, facilitators, community partners – form a constellation of care. Individually, a star offers light. Together, a constellation creates direction, story, and hope.

This season, those stars are shining like never before.

Because of our donors, volunteers, community groups, and local partners, our clubhouse is ever expanding circle of care.

This is what community looks like.

It looks like integrative health experts donating their time.
It looks like neighbors bringing canned goods and fresh produce.
It looks like financial gifts that keep programs accessible and free of charge.
It looks like showing up – even when you, too, are tired.

When hard things happen – whether in one body or across a whole community – our instinct at Gilda’s is to gather.

We gather around soup and conversation.
We gather in yoga rooms and art studios.
We gather in support groups where tears and laughter coexist.
We gather in classrooms where knowledge becomes empowerment.
We gather around pantry shelves that quietly say, “We’ve got you.”

Isolation deepens suffering – and connection lightens it.

As we move toward spring, I offer both gratitude and a gentle challenge:

How will each of us show up for community in times of need?

Will we check on a neighbor?
Will we volunteer an hour?
Will we share our expertise?
Will we give what we can – whether resources, encouragement, or presence?
Will we choose to be a star in someone else’s dark sky?

Every season tests us. Winter reveals what we are made of.

And what I see at Gilda’s Club Minnesota gives me tremendous hope.

I see courage.
I see generosity.
I see people who refuse to let others face cancer alone.
I see a constellation growing brighter.

Even in the longest winter, light remains.
And together, we are that light.

With deep appreciation and hope,
