Find Your Voice, Share Your Story

Ali DeCamillis December 21, 2020

As we wrap up the chapter on 2020, we eagerly and hopefully look forward to what will be written in 2021. For many, this past year brought unexpected curveballs, challenges, loss, and for some silver linings and a re-evaluation of priorities. Novelist Brian Falkner said,

“Life is like a book. There are good chapters, and there are bad chapters. But when you get to a bad chapter, you don’t stop reading the book. If you do…then you never get to find out what happens next!”

So here are some upcoming opportunities to begin shaping your next chapter…we may not be able to control the entire storyline, but we can influence the narrative.

LISTEN/TM Dear Cancer Teen Essay Contest

Calling all teens 13-18 to share how cancer has impacted their life – either through their own diagnosis or a loved one’s. This is our third annual writing contest and there are some great tech prizes. Many say teens won’t talk about cancer, however, over the years we have heard powerful insights and know this opportunity gives them a unique platform to share their voice and story. The deadline is December 31st so help us spread the word!

Your Story Matters Writing Series

Starting in January, get your creative juices flowing in this 6-session writing series with Paula Sandberg. Attendees will respond to writing prompts that allow them to reflect on who you are and that experiences that have shaped your life: life lessons, values, and family stories. No previous writing experience necessary!

Healing Power of Storytelling Educational Workshop

Join author and survivor, Steve Buechler on January 19th for “So What’s Your Story?” an educational workshop to explore the healing power of narrative. You will learn research that supports why expressive writing and sharing with peers can be beneficial to those impacted by cancer as well as the types of stories that help patients and caregivers navigate illness and sustain identity.

Red Door Reader’s Book Club – Happiness through Hardship by Caryn Sullivan

Thanks to our friends at Pretty Wellness and ModernWell, we had over 130 Happiness through Hardship books donated. And on Monday, February 15, we will be hosting a virtual book club! We invite anyone impacted by cancer to join in on a small group discussion on ways you have been able to navigate hardship and seek happiness…even while impacted by cancer. Books will be available for pick up at the clubhouse in January.

Extra resources to share your story:

Many Gilda’s members share that writing their story has had many benefits including, self-expression, the ability to give friends & family insight without needing to repeat, and a journal/timeline to reflect on the cancer journey. Here are some of our favorite free online platforms:
