Embrace the Sun with Summer Volunteering

Gilda's Club Minnesota June 27, 2023

Summer is the perfect time to be outside and enjoy nature. Studies show that spending time outside improves emotional wellness, boosts mental energy, and more. While volunteering connects people and counteracts the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. Combine enjoying the summer weather and volunteering by gardening at the clubhouse, leading a walking group in the community, transporting flowers from Trader Joe’s to the clubhouse, creating flower arrangements, or tabling at events to spread the word about GCTC.

Our garden crew meets regularly on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Activities include planting, weeding, moving plants, watering, and more. You can directly impact our members by beautifying the space around the clubhouse. Sign up for shifts here.

A new program that is offered is Gilda’s on the Go. These do not occur in the clubhouse or online – they are in the community. One of these offerings is Gilda’s Goes Walking. These are walking groups located at the Ridgedale Mall in Minnetonka, Harriet Island Regional Park in Saint Paul, and Normandale Lake in Bloomington. Talk with members while spending time in nature by leading one of these groups on Wednesdays from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM. Email Renee for this opportunity.

Every week we see the impact that the flowers donated by Trader Joe’s have on our members. From rough days to birthdays, these flowers improve mood and aid relaxation. Be part of this powerful effect by transporting flowers from Trader Joe’s to the clubhouse on a rotating basis Monday mornings between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM. Email Renee for this opportunity.

Many events, fairs, and fundraisers are held outside during the summer. As a Community Ambassador, you can spread the word about GCTC at these upcoming events. You may interact with potential members, volunteers, and donors, by answering questions, hearing personal stories, and sharing vital support information. The next event is Party in the Park with Rein in Sarcoma on Monday, July 31, from 4:30 PM – 8:15 PM at Como Park. The following event is Brooklyn Center’s Community Health Fair on Saturday, August 12, from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Sign up here to volunteer for upcoming events.

  • One or more clinics, building and maintaining a relationship with clinic contact(s).

Gilda Greeters
A Gilda Greeter is often the first person someone with cancer or their family member talks to at GCTC. They are the first impression of our program. Gilda Greeters welcome members into the clubhouse physically and virtually. These positions are scheduled for 12-week periods, coinciding with each new calendar period (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December). Greeters can start at any time during each period.

  • In-person Gilda Greeter shifts are typically 2-4 hours long. In-person Gilda Greeters welcome members, sign them in for classes, and work on various other tasks.
  • Virtual Gilda Greeter shifts are 30 minutes. These greeters welcome members to zoom classes, sign them in, turn hosting capabilities over to the facilitator, and answer questions.
