The Power of Service: Seven Principles

Gilda's Club Minnesota March 21, 2025

“No act of kindness, however small, is wasted.” — Aesop

In times of change and uncertainty, one of the most powerful ways to find stability and meaning is through service to others. As we explored in last winter’s Volunteer News article, giving our time, energy, and compassion not only benefits those we help but also has profound effects on our own well-being. Inspired by Wonder Drug: 7 Scientifically Proven Ways That Serving Others Is the Best Medicine for Yourself by Dr. Stephen Trzeciak and Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli, we continue our exploration of how acts of kindness and service can bring fulfillment and resilience, especially in challenging times.

How to Serve Others

1. Start Small

The journey to a lifetime of service begins with small, consistent actions. Even dedicating just sixteen minutes a day to kind acts and selfless service can lead to a lifetime of health, happiness, and success. Opportunities to serve are everywhere, from offering a helping hand to a neighbor to volunteering at Gilda’s Club Minnesota. Every minute counts, and small actions create ripples of kindness that can brighten someone’s day and foster lasting change.

2. Be Thankful

Gratitude strengthens our connections with others and fuels our desire to serve. When we actively express appreciation, we create a cycle of kindness that motivates continued acts of service. A simple “thank you,” whether spoken, written in a note, or shared in an email, can make a significant impact. By making gratitude a meaningful part of our lives, we cultivate a habit that deepens relationships and reinforces a sense of purpose.

3. Be Purposeful

Finding purpose in service means identifying needs and taking intentional action to meet them. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is ask, “How can I help today?” Purposeful service isn’t always about fixing problems—it’s also about showing up, listening, and being present for those who need support. The Ten-Five Rule—acknowledging people within ten feet with a smile and greeting those within five feet—reminds us to engage with those around us and create a culture of kindness.

4. Find Common Ground

Despite our differences, we share universal human experiences—the need for connection, understanding, and kindness. Engaging with people outside our usual circles, learning about different cultures, and assuming good intent in others can foster empathy and build stronger, more inclusive communities. By seeking to understand rather than judge, we create an environment where service and kindness thrive.

5. See It

Acts of service often begin with awareness. By slowing down and being mindful of the needs around us, we can recognize opportunities to help. Even small gestures—a kind word, a smile, or a simple act of assistance—can make a profound difference. When we intentionally look for ways to serve, we realize that kindness is everywhere, and our actions can contribute to a larger movement of compassion.

6. Elevate

Surrounding ourselves with people and organizations that prioritize service enriches our lives and strengthens our commitment to kindness. Being intentional about the company we keep—both professionally and personally—helps us stay grounded in our values. When we align with those who lift others up, we create a supportive environment that encourages generosity and selflessness.

7. Know Your Power

Each of us has the power to make a difference, regardless of our circumstances. You don’t need a title, wealth, or fame to create a meaningful impact. The ability to inspire, uplift, and support others is within us all. When we serve, we not only help those in need but also activate our own sense of purpose and fulfillment. The ripple effect of kindness extends beyond what we can see, reinforcing that our presence and actions truly matter.

“Your mind shines brightest when you enlighten others; your heart when you encourage others; your soul when you elevate others; and your life when you empower others.” — Matshona Dhliwayo

By embracing these seven principles of service, we cultivate a life filled with connection, purpose, and fulfillment. At Gilda’s Club Minnesota, our volunteers embody these values every day, creating a community where kindness, compassion, and support flourish. Their dedication inspires a ripple effect of generosity that strengthens not only our organization but also the hearts and lives of those we serve.

As we move forward, I invite you to reflect on how you can integrate these principles into your daily life. Whether through small gestures, intentional gratitude, or purposeful service, every act of kindness contributes to a better, more connected world. If you’re looking for ways to make a greater impact, consider volunteering at Gilda’s Club Minnesota. Your time, talents, and presence can bring comfort and joy to those who need it most, while also enriching your own life in ways you never imagined.

Thank you for being part of our mission. Together, let’s continue to serve, uplift, and inspire each other as we navigate these uncertain times with kindness and compassion.

With gratitude and appreciation,
